BMW Provides an optional component called a snap in adapter. These optional snap in adapters are not required although a nice feature to have. The snap in adapters are custom designed for each specific phone, and provide charging of the phone and routing of the phone antenna to your BMW phone antenna. Note: cars that were never equipped with BMW phone or BMW assist may not have the BMW cellular antenna installed. If your car was already equipped with the BMW CPT8000 phone system or newer you may have a cellphone booster already installed in your car. This booster, (compensator), boosts the phone signal from the phone up to 2 watts of power. If you have the BMW compensator in your car, the snap in adapters become more useful.

If you do not have the compensator in your BMW, you can easily install it. The BMW installation document for the E39 is on this page. Although this doc covers the E39, installing in other BMWs is pretty much the same process. It is a simple plug and play. There are two versions of the compensator available. US and ECE (Euro). Make sure you get the correct compensator for your car as they operate at different frequencies. I am not familiar with all of the part numbers although 84 21 6 932 865 is one version I am familiar with in US cars.

I am not sure when the RAZR snap in adapter will be available for the older body style BMWs although this post has information on how others have modified the RAZR snap in adapter to work with the older body style BMWs.
