Vehicle Display Systems
The basic design
philosophy of the Intravee is that it should use whatever display
capabilities are available on a particular vehicle to the fullest
extent possible.
The intention is to be able to support the full
range of BMW vehicle display options from the single line display bar
on the E46 Business RDS radio to the multiple field display of the BMW
professional navigation video screen.
For supporting the different systems the Intravee
has several User Interface (UI) modes, these are :
Outlined below is a list of various BMW head
units and a brief description of the status of support and the
User Interface setting for the Intravee.

BMW
E39 - 5 series 1997-2003, BMW E38 - 7 series
1995-2001 and BMW E53 - X5 2000-2006
There are many variations of E39, E38 and E53
business head units. There are three basic families of
display, Navigation, MID (Multi-Information-Display) and IRIS
(Integrated Radio Information System). The business head unit
is made up of two parts, a drive mechanism, which may be Tape, CD or
MiniDisc, and a lower section which provides display capability and
some control. The lower section may be a MID or
IRIS, the MID is always a separate part, the IRIS may be separate or
integrated. The MID uses UI4 to display information, the IRIS
component may not be capable of displaying text from an external
device. The selction shown below may not cover all
variations, but shows the basic components.
In addition to the head unit there are two types
of instrument cluster, High OBC and Low OBC. The high OBC is
capable of displaying text, the Low OBS is not.

Double Key Press Issue
On some older BMW head units displaying text
requires a press of any button to clear the text. This makes
using the Intravee quite difficult as an additional key press is
required, which clears the text from the display, before
further navigation through the menus or control is possible.
Also, if text scrolling is implemented, it is almost impossible to
perform an action as each scroll of the display resets the requirement
to press a key.
Navigation
System Details
The
UI mode required for the Professional Navigation system is not
dependent on the type of monitor but the type of Navigation Computer
and software version that it is running.
UI
mode 5 is required for Mk I, Mk II navigation computers and Mk III
navigation computers running software version 3-1/31
(sometimes refered to as version 17.1) or
lower. The software version is displayed in the top right
corner of the settings menu.
UI
mode 6 is required for Mk III navigation computers running software
version 3-1/40 (sometimes refered to as version 18) or higher and MK IV
(DVD based) navigation computers.
UI
mode 6 can support 'enhanced features' if the software version
is 4/1-40 (sometimes refered to as version 24) or higher.

Digital
DSP
E39,
E38 and X5's with DSP may be either Digital or Analogue.
Digital DSP systems accept a digital input from the CD Changer,
Analogue DSP systems accept an analogue input from the CD Changer in
the same way as none DSP systems.
The
exact configurations that determin the use of Digital or Analog DSP are
not well defined. Generally cars built before September 2002
have 'Digital' DSP, cars built after September 2002 have Analogue
DSP. However with the X5 it is reported that the DSP
with the MID is always Digital and DSP with Nav is always
Analogue. It is also reported that all E39s with DSP and Nav
are always Digital. Further, it is reported that
it may be possible change the DSP type by recoding the
vehicle, i.e. change a Digital DSP system to Analogue or vica
versa.
If
the vehicle is already fitted with a CD Changer then it is easy to
determine which system is in use by looking at the connections to the
CD Changer : if the connection is a small coaxial wire then Digital DSP
is in use, if the connection is a 6 pin block connector then Analogue
DSP is in use.
As
the Intravee provides an Analogue signal, for systems with Digital DSP
the output must be converted to a Digital input to the DSP
amplifier using an A->D converter.
